The joint was jumping, skipping and promenading on Saturday 1st March at Lingwood Village Hall. The second BAWT Barn Dance was a huge success raising approximately £1000 from ticket sales, the raffle and other games played on the night, which will go towards ongoing maintenance of the ancient wood.
We greatly appreciate the time and music-making mastery of the Yare Folk group who entertained us all so brilliantly on the night free of charge. They always get the crowd up on their feet and having a great time.
When the band were taking a well-earned breather, attendees were entertained with several extra games including Ian's ever-popular 'Head and Tails' game!
We are very grateful to the local companies that generously donated prizes for the raffle:
Family entry voucher for Fairhaven Water Gardens
A luxury hamper from The Egg Shed (Instagram)
Several vouchers for The Shoulder of Mutton
A book from Mike Page Photography

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to pull up sycamore seedlings, remove tree guards and clear away rubbish. Left unchecked, sycamore would come to dominate the woodland, choking out other indigenous plants and trees. The Wood Lane hedge is now well established and leaving the tree guards in place would have started to strangle the stems of the bushes.

A new team of Wood Warden volunteers attended a training session led by our trustees, Ash and Alasdair, on how to make routine safety checks of the woodland, and to report any new risks they find through a simple online system created by another volunteer, Pip. Much thanks is due to all the volunteers involved in helping to keep the woods a safe place to visit!
BAWT would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers who braved the cold on 12th January to assist with some woodland management work. Activities included collecting materials from the wood floor, such as twigs and small branches, to create a 'dead' hedge barrier along the steep edge of the central pit. Volunteers also made the remains of the old well safer by filling it with gravel and stone gathered from the pit. We greatly appreciate the time and energy of the volunteers who helped to complete this important work before the emergence of the bluebells which are particularly sensitive to disturbance.
Despite the cold everyone enjoyed themselves and we were able to complete everything we wanted to do in one day. Volunteering is a great way to give yourself a boost, meet new people and share your skills. If you are interested in finding out about our next wood maintenance volunteering day or would like to explore the other ways you can help, please see the 'support us' page of our website.
We were excited to hold our first annual general meeting on 20th September 2024, 7pm, at Strumphaw Community Hall.
We were delighted that over 20 BAWT members attended the event. During our AGM we discussed the progress we have made over the past year.
We were privileged to hear from three amazing guest speakers. Brian Tubby spoke to us about capturing the perfect wildlife photo. Helen Baczkowska and Lydia Kittle from the Norfolk Wildlife Trust shared their extensive knowledge about the area's ecology. BAWT would like to thank them for being so generous with their time and expertise, both talks were really interesting and a real highlight of the evening.
Another highlight was our workshop to gather valuable member insight. We really appreciated everyone's enthusiasm and being so keen to share their thoughts during the workshop sessions. It was great to hear everyone sharing their perspectives and experiences. Your input will feed into future management plans for the wood.
The Trustees would like to thank everyone for their continued support and we look forward to seeing you at our next AGM.
On Bank Holiday Monday (6th May 2024) BAWT trustees and volunteers set up an information stand beside the new sign (with permission from the current landowner) to welcome visitors to the wood. We spoke to almost 100 people, many of whom used the opportunity to become members of the Trust. A big thank-you to everyone who stopped to chat with us.
We raised well over £1,000 in a fantastic evening of music, dancing and laughter at Lingwood Village Hall. A huge thank you to The Yare Folk who gave their time and talent for nothing. They kept our toes tapping all evening and taught everyone the dances. The final figure raised will be posted here, once we've finished counting!
Update (13 May 2024): Final total raised £1,164.15.
Buckenham Ancient Woodland Trust would like to say a big "thank you" to everyone who came and helped with two litter picks in the central part of Buckenham Woods, which we hope to buy in the near future. We were there with the consent of the current landowner; he and his brother also helped us get the clear-up underway. There were over 40 volunteers from our local villages and specifically groups from the Lingwood Scouts and Yare Valley Rotary.
Together, we cleared over 30 bags of rubbish and over a 100 tyres. Thanks to the assistance of Pages, the tyres will be used to generate electricity. Old metal drums and sheets of metal will be recycled separately. We even found a kitchen skink! Both days were hugely successful and it was great to be outside in such a beautiful wood making it look even better.
We won’t be litter picking again until after our wonderful bluebells have finished. In the meantime please find out how you can help us to raise the money we need to buy the woodland - maybe you'll make some new friends in the process ... Check out our website especially the Support us page.
