In this edition, you can read about our most recent fundraising event. The latest BAWT Barn Dance hosted by Yare Folk was a resounding success and a brilliant night was had by all. We will highlight the latest work that has been carried out in the woods by our dedicated volunteers, and we shine a spotlight on our newest volunteer role, the wood wardens. Finally, a reminder about our photo competition.
Thank you for your continued support.
Following the purchase of Buckenham Wood, BAWT is now working on a strategy and a 10 year management plan which aligns with the charity’s long-term vision to conserve and enhance the wood for the wildlife and nature that lives there, and for the quiet enjoyment of the local community. We will be sharing more details about this with members over the next few months.
In addition to the support and funds raised by the local community BAWT has received funding from the Greater Norwich Growth Board through their Infrastructure Investment Fund. The funding will be used for some specific infrastructure work within the wood, including improving the access points to the wood, the addition of interpretation boards, path improvements as well as canopy raising and tree safety works. This work is to be completed in 2025/6. This grant does not cover future maintenance of the wood, so we still need and are very grateful for your donations!
Buckenham Ancient Woodland Trust is seeking volunteers to be part of a small team of butterfly monitors. The team will contribute to the important work of the UK Butterfly Monitoring System, and collected data will be stored on a national database. The survey work will take place regularly during the spring and summer months on warm days when butterflies are active and will involve walking through Buckenham Wood on a set route counting butterflies. We know that visiting Buckenham Wood to see the bluebells is an annual event for many in the local community. We all love seeing them and taking photos of them at this time of year.
Bluebells are extremely sensitive, and the leaves can be easily damaged. Bruised or crushed leaves weaken the plant and can kill it. We encourage everyone to enjoy the bluebells and take photographs from the main paths.
You may notice some new ‘bluebell recovery zones’ in the wood. The hope is that by reducing the disturbance in these small areas we can help damaged areas of bluebells to regenerate. We can already see the difference in areas where we have put logs down to mark the paths.
Last year, the Trustees hosted an information stand in Buckenham Wood, which was a fantastic success. It allowed us to update visitors on the progress of purchasing the wood and gave visitors to the wood an opportunity to ask questions, and share their valuable feedback.
We’re planning to hold a similar stand this year on Sunday, 27th April, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. If you are in the wood that day, do come by and say hello. Our table will be set up near the BAWT sign. We are looking forward to meeting you.
A big thank you to all the volunteers who turned out in late February to lend a hand with, among other things, removing defunct plastic tree protectors from the mature hedgerow which runs along Wood Lane. Following this, and under the direction of our conservation Trustee, the group also cleared a large area of sycamore saplings which are a non-native species, as well as removing barbed wire and additional rubbish (old tyres, glass bottles etc).

We want everyone to safely enjoy Buckenham Wood. To do this we need to be aware of and assess potential risks. To help support this, BAWT has welcomed several volunteer wood wardens to the team.
Following a training day run by BAWT trustees, the wood wardens will regularly walk through the central plot of Buckenham Wood (the part managed by the trust), looking for and noting potential risks to both visitors and the wildlife which lives there. Concerns are reported via a simple online system.
The following quote is from one our wonderful wood wardens about their experience.
“I have been visiting Buckenham woods for many years, so when I heard that the central part, of the woods had been purchased for its preservation, I was delighted. When I later saw a request for volunteers, I thought I’d like to help. I have been volunteering on work parties and have recently become one of the Wood Wardens. We had a training session learning about the ecology and geology of the wood, risk assessments, and IT support for recording any issues. The more I learn about the wildlife and history of the wood, the more interesting and enjoyable every visit becomes. Springtime, of course, sees the wood in its full splendour. At this time of year, I like to visit in the early morning when the dawn chorus is in full swing.” - BAWT Wood Warden.
The second BAWT Barn Dance was a huge success raising approximately £1000, which will go towards ongoing maintenance of the ancient woodland.
We greatly appreciate the time and music-making mastery of the Yare Folk group who entertained us all so brilliantly on the night free of charge. We are also grateful to the local companies that generously donated prizes for the raffle (Fairhaven Water Gardens, The Egg Shed South Burlingham, The Shoulder of Mutton and Mike Page Photography).
