A huge thank-you to everyone who was able to come along and lend a hand to start one of the first tasks recommended in our woodland management plan. Our amazing volunteers tackled a large patch of the invasive plant species variegated yellow archangel (see image of leaf), in Buckenham Wood. To find out more visit out past events page.
If you are interested in coming along to our next woodland work day keep an eye on our future events page, or sign up to become a volunteer to receive email notification of all planned woodland work days.
On a beautiful summer evening in June, Strumpshaw Brownies swapped their usual Wednesday meet up location, for a ramble through Buckenham Wood. They joined BAWT volunteers for a short stroll around the wood, pausing often to learn about the trees and take photos of some of the fascinating fungi.
To round off the walk the group drew pictures of the trees they had seen, and some of the wildlife that make Buckenham Wood their home, including Samantha the Snail. Check out some of their brilliant artwork including photos taken by the girls – I think you will agree they have all got keen eyes for detail. A good time was had by all, and it was wonderful way to spend a summer evening!
As the management plan for the wood develops there will come a point where we will want to introduce some additional trees. Ideally, we want to re-stock with saplings grown from the seeds of existing trees within the wood.
This autumn, we will be encouraging supporters to collect hazelnuts, acorns, hornbeam seeds and other tree seeds to grow in their own gardens for a couple of years until the saplings are big enough to transfer back into the wood.
We will share photos of the seeds and tips for growing them in future BAWT newsletters.
There is still time to submit your entries for our photographic competition. Our competition runs until 1st September 2025.
The theme is Buckenham Woods throughout the seasons. Winning photos will appear in our 2026 calendar which will be available to buy towards the end of the year. All proceeds will go towards the continued maintenance of the wood.
To find out more about the competition and how to enter click here. Photographs taken before the submission period can be submitted, as long as they were taken in the central plot of Buckenham Wood managed by the Trust.
