Happy New Year! Welcome to the first edition of our 2026 newsletter.
We’re excited to share recent updates to the Buckenham Wood management plan and upcoming events, including our next Barn Dance, 11th April!
Work continues steadily on our Buckenham Wood management plan, and we’re pleased to share a few recent highlights from the winter season.
Wildlife sanctuary: Visitors to the section of the wood owned by the Buckenham Ancient Woodland Trust will notice the closure of two recently formed paths and the creation of a wildlife sanctuary. This area will give sensitive species an undisturbed habitat in which to shelter and breed. A map on our website shows exactly where the sanctuary will be and what paths have been closed (click here).
Tree Works: Tree safety and woodland management tasks are nearing completion. Contractors are also creating nesting and roosting cavities for birds and bats in some of the dead standing trees. Read Bob’s blog for more information about the benefit of dead standing trees.
Chestnut benches: Benches made from sustainable timber have been installed — one positioned especially for spring photo opportunities when the bluebells are in bloom.
BAWT have held a couple of volunteer days so far in 2026, thank you to everyone who has braved the elements to lend a hand, your help makes a huge difference.
With the bluebell leaves already emerging, work has been limited, but the team have continued to line paths to protect these vulnerable plants. To find out more click here.
Looking for a fun way to get some exercise and fresh air? Why not join one of our future volunteer work parties! It’s a brilliant way to meet new people and burn some calories at the same time.

Bluebells are exceptionally vulnerable to damage, and keeping to the paths is one of the simplest ways we can help them recover and thrive in Buckenham Wood. At this time of the year, their leaves are just beginning to emerge and giving them space over the coming weeks will help ensure the strong, vibrant display we all look forward to in April and May.

Buckenham Wood looked beautiful under its blanket of snow in January — here are a few photos to share the magic!
BAWT purchased the woodland in October 2024, starting the hard work and financial commitment to maintain it. Let’s all get together to help ensure that the local community continues to benefit from our Ancient Woodland for generations to come.
1. Become a member – it’s free!
We need members so that funders can see we have community support, and to guide our decisions.
2. Volunteer
We need more volunteers to help join us run the Trust, and to help with practical tasks in the wood.
3. Donate
We’ve raised money to purchase the woodland, but there will now be more work to be done in the wood.
4. Follow us on Facebook
Please follow and share us on Facebook.
5. Spread the word
If you think you know someone who would enjoy getting involved with our work please tell them about our website, where they can find out more about us.
